P. daurica subsp. mlokosewitschii peony

The First Peony of our Season is Blooming! Get Ready for More.

Our first peony of the season bloomed today! The species peony P. daurica subsp. mlokosewitschii seedings - about 4 to 5 days later than many years. It is the predictor of our peony bloom season here in Oregon.

This year appears to be on a normal weather pattern compared to several recent years, when our season was a couple of weeks ahead. In 2016 we were one month ahead this years growth/bloom.

I look for a few varieties to be blooming when we open the peony fields and iris gardens to visitors May 1st. Weather can change how fast or slow the flowers will bloom depending upon the amount of heat or extended cool weather we receive. At this time, I predict we will have peak bloom season in the later half of May.

We have a number of peonies that are getting ready to bloom in the next two weeks. I'll try to get a bloom update out on this blog or the front page of our website a couple of times a week. If I fail to do that, then the season is in full swing.

Plan a visit between May 1 and June 15th (daily, 10 am - 6 pm) to see the flowers blooming. We'll have an assortment of peony plants, cut peonies and bouquets for sale. Potted peonies are also available Fridays and Saturdays in April.
