Here come the peonies! Looking at the peony fields with all the budded stems, it is hard to believe that over 60 varieties are already blooming. There will be many varieties popping open this week and the following weeks – sun is on the horizon!

Brooks Gardens Peony & Iris Bloom Status

There is a four week swing in bloom time from 2016 to this year. Last year we had the earliest peony bloom season on record, peaking May 5th.  This year we were cooler and the bloom is about a week later than normal. We expect peak bloom in late May, which is more usual than the past two years. With lots of sun and warmth about to arrive in western Oregon in the next week, there will be different peony varieties opening daily for the next few weeks. Our historic iris garden has come alive with flowers and the sweet scent will greet you as you wander the pathways.

Our Secluded Peony Farm

We were blessed to have cut peonies for Mother’s Day weekend and puzzled when one of our Facebook followers said she stopped by and there were no bouquets. Turns out several folks went to a neighboring peony garden and thought they were here. As Brooks, OR is the peony & iris capital of Oregon, I remind folks that we are the ‘hidden’ peony farm, tucked out of sight from the highway. Driving here is a short adventure, and while we are only ½ mile down Topaz Street, the seclusion fills visitors with delight upon arrival. Follow the purple signs in the area. Directions to Brooks Gardens.

Those Itoh Peonies are In Their Glory

Many of the Itoh intersectional peonies are blooming this week, including Berry Garcia, Border Charm, Callie’s Memory, Canary Brilliants, Chief Black Hawk, Cora Louise, Hillary, Julia Rose, Lemon Dream, Luxuriant, Magical Mystery Tour, Old Rose Dandy and Sequestered Sunshine (fitting name for Oregon gardens). These peonies (a bush peony with a tree peony parent) come in amazing colors ranging from stark white, dark red, bright yellow and blends of orange, pink, cream and reds.

Herbaceous Peonies

The mid-season herbaceous varieties are now joining the peony festival of blossoms including many of the early corals, reds and yellows. Lemon Chiffon is in all it's glory!

Brooks Gardens is located at 6219 Topaz Street NE, Brooks, Oregon, 97305. We are just over 1 mile north of Brooks, OR (between Woodburn and Salem, off of 99 E).

From Portland area take I-5 south to exit 263; exit left (east); 1 mile to Brooks; turn left (north) at stop light.  About 40 minutes south of Portland and 30 minutes south of Tualatin, Wilsonville and Canby, OR. Follow the purple peonies & iris signs.

Rain or shine we're here with Mothers Day peony bouquets. Waking up to a morning drizzle is refreshing today - after the heat of yesterday.

Thank you to all the wonderful visitors we are meeting this season. We appreciate seeing many of you returning with friends to show them our secluded iris gardens and peony farm. While we are just a half mile off the highway, first time visitors are amazed at the winding pathways, large conifers, tree peonies and over 1,000 bearded iris varieties they find in our nearly 3 acre iris gardens. The iris are in peak bloom this week and their sweet fragrance is wafting through the gardens and beyond.

You can walk from the iris gardens directly into the peony fields where over 100 varieties of peonies are in full bloom. You can see the differing colors and styles of peonies and compare fragrances - enjoy your very own little peony festival! The later peony varieties will be opening over the coming days/weeks. They are blooming early this season.

Mother’s Day weekend on our farm could not be more spectacular with bloom this year. Both the peony fields and the historic bearded iris gardens are brimming with flowers this week.  As soon as we cut and bundle a few hundred peony blossoms for bouquets, it's out to the field for another wheelbarrow load to fill our fresh cut flower tent.

Annie, Sam, Rita, Joe, Carmen and other family members and friends are pitching in with extra pizzazz this season. The peonies are coming on strong and we are blessed with great family and friends. Seeing our smiling visitors lifts our spirits and energizes us. It’s wonderful to see so many returning customers and new visitors each day. We never tire of hearing your wonderful comments on our ‘Amazing’ gardens or your thrill at discovering a new peony.

Stop by and feed your soul with the beauty of the flowers.

The peonies are bursting open this week. Looks like the next week or so will be leading to peak bloom earlier than other years. Different peony varieties are opening daily this week. There is loads of color in the peony field. The iris gardens are magnificent - just in time for Mother's Day weekend in Oregon.

The Itoh peonies are in great bloom, ranging from copper, yellows, reds, whites and blended colors. Kopper Kettle is such a spot of brightness - we are in love!

Our field is now dancing with many shades of blush, pink, red and yellow herbaceous peonies.

Even a few whites are opening now - Colonel Owen Cousins with its blush undertones

soothes my soul each spring

Today we welcome the month of May and the peonies are already a sight to see. The early mid-season peonies are starting to bloom: Bess Bockstoce, Carina, Carnation Bouquet, Command Performance, Flame, Green Lotus, Lavender, Lemon Dream, Petite Elegance, Pink Hawaiian Coral, Raspberry Charm, Red Charm, Serene Pastel, Yellow Crown, Yellow Dream and Yellow Heaven. White Innocence and Skylark are magnificent, very tall peonies, perfect for hedgerows and background planting.

Now is the perfect time to compare the coral peonies: to see the pink in Coral Supreme, the orange in Coral Sunset and the sheer size of the Coral Charms. I always find an alluring softness in the hue of the Pink Hawaiian Corals. Visit during the next week or so to catch all of them in bloom.

While we are not near peak bloom, there are many varieties opening daily. With warm afternoons today and tomorrow, Mothers Day weekend will be a delight to flower lovers, with loads of peony and iris bloom. Our iris gardens are full of color this week, with many more irises to open next week.

Stop by and pick up peony bouquets for Mothers Day, or any day – fresh from the farm.  We are open daily, 10 am – 6 pm through June 15, 2016.

While our peony season is just getting started, many of the Itoh intersectional peonies are blooming: Callie's Memory, Cora Louise, Chief Black Hawk, First Arrival, Julia Rose, Kopper Kettle, Magical Mystery Tour, Prairie Charm, Scarlet Heaven, Singing in the Rain, Watermelon Wine, Yellow Heaven, Yellow Heaven are looking gorgeous. Many are available in containers or to order bare root for fall planting. Now is the time to see them in bloom to pick your favorites.

The corals are opening – Coral Supreme and Coral Sunset are blooming just ahead of our Coral Charms this year. Red Charm has a few blossoms (usually May 12 or so). Flame and Paramount are two very bright peonies that are blooming now. I cannot get over the beauty of the peony bushes this year – they look more wonderful than ever, if that is possible.

The wisteria in the iris garden is in spectacular bloom. No, those aren’t blooming conifer trees on either side of the arbor, it’s our ‘wisteria gone wild’ that so many visitors are enthralled with.

We invite you to visit our farm during the peony and iris bloom season – the early peonies are blooming over two weeks ahead of ‘usual’ this year.

Hours are 10 am – 6 pm, daily through June 15, 2016. Potted peonies, cut flowers and bouquets are for sale at the farm. Cut peony flowers may be ordered for April and May weddings and events (picked up at the farm).
