Peony News

Rain or shine we're here with Mothers Day peony bouquets. Waking up to a morning drizzle is refreshing today - after the heat of yesterday.

Thank you to all the wonderful visitors we are meeting this season. We appreciate seeing many of you returning with friends to show them our secluded iris gardens and peony farm. While we are just a half mile off the highway, first time visitors are amazed at the winding pathways, large conifers, tree peonies and over 1,000 bearded iris varieties they find in our nearly 3 acre iris gardens. The iris are in peak bloom this week and their sweet fragrance is wafting through the gardens and beyond.

You can walk from the iris gardens directly into the peony fields where over 100 varieties of peonies are in full bloom. You can see the differing colors and styles of peonies and compare fragrances - enjoy your very own little peony festival! The later peony varieties will be opening over the coming days/weeks. They are blooming early this season.

Stop by to see the flowers or pick up a plant to transplant now. You can also select and order peonies for fall planting.

Hours are 10 am – 6 pm, daily through June 15, 2016. Potted peonies, cut flowers and bouquets are for sale at the farm.

Mother’s Day weekend on our farm could not be more spectacular with bloom this year. Both the peony fields and the historic bearded iris gardens are brimming with flowers this week.  As soon as we cut and bundle a few hundred peony blossoms for bouquets, it's out to the field for another wheelbarrow load to fill our fresh cut flower tent.

Annie, Sam, Rita, Joe, Carmen and other family members and friends are pitching in with extra pizzazz this season. The peonies are coming on strong and we are blessed with great family and friends. Seeing our smiling visitors lifts our spirits and energizes us. It’s wonderful to see so many returning customers and new visitors each day. We never tire of hearing your wonderful comments on our ‘Amazing’ gardens or your thrill at discovering a new peony.

Stop by and feed your soul with the beauty of the flowers.

The peonies are bursting open this week. Looks like the next week or so will be leading to peak bloom earlier than other years. Different peony varieties are opening daily this week. There is loads of color in the peony field. The iris gardens are magnificent - just in time for Mother's Day weekend in Oregon.

The Itoh peonies are in great bloom, ranging from copper, yellows, reds, whites and blended colors. Kopper Kettle is such a spot of brightness - we are in love!

Our field is now dancing with many shades of blush, pink, red and yellow herbaceous peonies.

Even a few whites are opening now - Colonel Owen Cousins with its blush undertones

soothes my soul each spring

Today we welcome the month of May and the peonies are already a sight to see. The early mid-season peonies are starting to bloom: Bess Bockstoce, Carina, Carnation Bouquet, Command Performance, Flame, Green Lotus, Lavender, Lemon Dream, Petite Elegance, Pink Hawaiian Coral, Raspberry Charm, Red Charm, Serene Pastel, Yellow Crown, Yellow Dream and Yellow Heaven. White Innocence and Skylark are magnificent, very tall peonies, perfect for hedgerows and background planting.

Now is the perfect time to compare the coral peonies: to see the pink in Coral Supreme, the orange in Coral Sunset and the sheer size of the Coral Charms. I always find an alluring softness in the hue of the Pink Hawaiian Corals. Visit during the next week or so to catch all of them in bloom.

While we are not near peak bloom, there are many varieties opening daily. With warm afternoons today and tomorrow, Mothers Day weekend will be a delight to flower lovers, with loads of peony and iris bloom. Our iris gardens are full of color this week, with many more irises to open next week.

Stop by and pick up peony bouquets for Mothers Day, or any day – fresh from the farm.  We are open daily, 10 am – 6 pm through June 15, 2016.

May 13, 2013

What a delightful day Mother’s Day was at Brooks Gardens. My Mom comes out to the farm most days to greet customers and enjoys the camaraderie that goes on. Lot of folks came out to enjoy looking at the flowers and join in the fun of a visit to the country.

The day was splendid with lots of peony and iris bloom for Mother’s Day visitors. You see, sense and hear the joy and excitement of people as they view the fields and gardens and spot yet another of their favorites.

When you have a seasonal business, such as a flower farm, you are always thinking of new marketing strategies. One of our daughter’s and a niece rented a table at a community college ‘spring faire’ last week. They excitedly anticipated selling bouquets. Well, as some great ideas go, this one just didn’t pan out. Tucked in a back room, they had virtually no foot traffic, and very little sales in 4-5 hours. Then they did what many an entrepreneur would do - they gave away their product. One bouquet went to the elderly couple at the restaurant they had lunch in. Another went to the restaurant. One was dropped off at a business. Some of the folks they offered a free bouquet to, were weary of accepting something from a stranger; so, they carefully placed a few on car windshields. Each had a business card attached. The girls felt a bit defeated; but, happy to share the flowers.

Yesterday, my sister Annie spotted a couple from her church and went to greet them. They were surprised to see her, as they didn’t know of her connection to our farm.  They shared their story of how they came to find us and it just warmed our hearts. Her friends’ son had found a bouquet on his car and gave it to his mom, who put in a vase to enjoy. She stopped by to visit and asked where she got those beautiful peonies. Her friend handed her our card that the girls left with the flowers. She just had to drive out to see this peony farm. The story made us all smile. Then another lady came and mentioned one of the businesses she stopped at earlier in the week had a gorgeous bouquet of peonies and our card…. the girls were successful in their endeavor; just not as they had originally planned. You go, girls!

We sell wrapped peony bouquets, ready to go; and also have a big tub of cut peonies that customers can select from to create their own bouquet. Seeing their thrill in selecting the perfect flowers is priceless.

We will be enjoying this cooler weather – come by and join us!  We have tremendous bloom this week.

Attached are some photos from Mother’s Day: Bob peony; Strawberry Wine peony; some of our potted peonies that are for sale at Brooks Gardens and a photo of some of the field peonies.  'Bob' peony is one of our favorites and it honored us 'Best in Show/Grand Champion' awards at the 2011 American Peony Society floral exhibit.
