Peony News

Peonies come in so many colors, flower styles and fragrances. You can check out your favorites at our peony farm where we showcase dozens of varieties. This week we have about 100 varieties of peony flowers in the display tent for side by side comparison.

Compare the different whites, reds, pinks, yellows and blended colors. The Coral Charm, Coral Sunset and Coral Supreme peonies can be easily compared. Like red peonies? Browse the Benjamin Franklin, Charm, Command Performance, Henry Bockstoce, Lucky, Old Faithful, Mikado, Red Charm and others to see which red peony your eye goes to.

Pink and white peonies are here, too; along with some of the intersectional varieties like Garden Treasure and Lemon Dream. Other yellow peonies on display are the big Lemon Chiffon and the favorite light yellow, Prairie Moon.

Stop by the farm to see some spectacular blossoms - from the single flower style of Topeka Garnet, the Japanese style Dainty Lass and the double peonies like Bridal Gown, Nice Gal and Shirley Temple.

We have many peonies available in containers to transplant now. Bare root peony orders for fall planting may be placed at the farm or online at brooksgardens.com

Cut peony flowers are also for sale.

We are about 30 minutes south of Tualatin, Wilsonville and Canby, OR. About 40 minutes south of Portland, OR. Follow our purple Peonies & Iris signs in the area.

Today we welcome the month of May and the peonies are already a sight to see. The early mid-season peonies are starting to bloom: Bess Bockstoce, Carina, Carnation Bouquet, Command Performance, Flame, Green Lotus, Lavender, Lemon Dream, Petite Elegance, Pink Hawaiian Coral, Raspberry Charm, Red Charm, Serene Pastel, Yellow Crown, Yellow Dream and Yellow Heaven. White Innocence and Skylark are magnificent, very tall peonies, perfect for hedgerows and background planting.

Now is the perfect time to compare the coral peonies: to see the pink in Coral Supreme, the orange in Coral Sunset and the sheer size of the Coral Charms. I always find an alluring softness in the hue of the Pink Hawaiian Corals. Visit during the next week or so to catch all of them in bloom.

While we are not near peak bloom, there are many varieties opening daily. With warm afternoons today and tomorrow, Mothers Day weekend will be a delight to flower lovers, with loads of peony and iris bloom. Our iris gardens are full of color this week, with many more irises to open next week.

Stop by and pick up peony bouquets for Mothers Day, or any day – fresh from the farm.  We are open daily, 10 am – 6 pm through June 15, 2016.

Coral colored peonies are simply breathtaking. 'Coral Sunset' peony (Wissing/C. Klehm, 1965) displays a range of hues from deep coral to soft apricot yellow. Upon opening, the semi-double flowers have a rich coral color with orange undertones. Cloud cover during bud stage and upon opening will intensify the colors. As it blooms, it shows off many blends of coral, orange, apricot and yellow, each color softening as the flower ages. Toward the end of its bloom, it lightens to a soft yellow.

These early mid-season peonies are wonderful cut flowers and landscape peonies. When placed in display with over 100 different peony varieties, these ones will be the show stoppers.

The American Peony Society awarded it the Gold Medal in 2003 and with it's nice growth habitat and strong stems, it was also bestowed with their Award of Landscape Merit in 2009. I particularly like the foliage of Coral Sunset (and many of the coral peonies), as the veined leaves are quite lovely. This hybrid peony grows about 34" tall and multiplies nicely in the garden. One can never have enough Coral Sunset peonies.

All of these photos are of Coral Sunset peonies at varying stages of bloom.
