*Peonies are fairly carefree plants to grow. They grow in USDA zones 2-8 and need a cold dormant period to properly bloom.
• Plant promptly upon receiving root.
• Peonies like well-drained soil and full sun. Half sun is acceptable.
• Prepare the soil by spading a planting hole 1 ½’ deep and 2’ wide. Fill in with good garden soil and place the peony root with the eyes (buds) at the top and the roots down or at an angle.
• Cover the eyes of the peony root with 1 – 2” soil. Planting too deep will stunt growth.
• Water thoroughly upon planting. Be sure there is only 1” -2” of soil on top of the eyes after water settles in.
• ¼ cup of garden fertilizer after the first year may be applied. Water occasionally the first year and in dry spells after they are well established.
• Botrytis, a fungal disease can be controlled by applying a fungicide at 7-10 day intervals as soon as the plant sprouts in the early spring. Several applications of a fungicide can control leaf spot. Contact your local garden supply retailer for information and follow label instructions.
• Cut plant to ground in fall and clean all leaves from the area.
